Show Summary

Before Rent, there was tick, tick…BOOM!

Jonathan Larson, the Pulitzer Prize-and Tony Award-winning composer of Rent, first created this semi-autobiographical explosive and joyful rock-musical about creativity, the fear of mortality, and the power of music to change the world.

On the eve of his thirtieth birthday, Jon, a promising young composer in New York, has lots of accolades but no income. His  girlfriend wants to get married and move to Cape Cod, and his best friend has abandoned the bohemian life for a corporate salary on Madison Avenue. How will Jon decide which path to take, when all he really wants to do is make something that will live forever while his own time is running out?

Larson did change the world, but didn’t live to see Rent succeed. The only other work of his to survive, tick, tick…BOOM! shows how Larson’s musical voice forever changed how we experience music on Broadway, and affirms our very human need to create in the face of loss.

Our new Artistic Director Eric Rosen brings his acclaimed production – hailed as a powerful and bold new interpretation of this show – for his Cape Playhouse debut. No matter your age, tick, tick…BOOM!  will leave you cheering for this exuberant, beautiful, and powerful musical.

tick, tick…BOOM! was originally produced off-Broadway in June, 2001 by Victoria Leacock, Robyn Goodman, Dede Harris, Lorie Cowen Levy, and Beth Smith.

tick, tick…BOOM! is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI).
All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI.
